A Step by Step Guide to Handling Utilities When You Move Home

Moving to a new home is an exciting milestone, but amidst the boxes, bubble wrap, and to-do lists, it’s easy to forget about the less glamorous side of relocating: managing your utilities and bills.

At Phoenix Clearance and Removals, we understand that a successful move isn’t just about getting your belongings from A to B. It’s also about handling the essential details that keep your new home running smoothly. That’s why we’ve created this ultimate step-by-step guide to help you transition your utility services without stress.

Start Early! Don’t Leave It to the Last Minute.

The earlier you start planning your utility transfers, the smoother things will go. As soon as your moving date is confirmed, create a checklist of all essential services and providers you’ll need to update or cancel. This typically includes:

  • Gas and electricity

  • Water supply

  • Internet and landline

  • TV licence

  • Council tax

  • Home insurance

  • Mobile phone provider (if address-based)

  • Subscription services (e.g. Netflix, Amazon, magazines)

  • Banking institutions and credit cards

Contact these providers at least 2–3 weeks in advance to inform them of your move. This allows time to arrange final readings, settle outstanding bills, or schedule new installations if needed.

Take Meter Readings on Moving Day

This is one of the most important (and often forgotten) steps.

On the day you move out, take clear, time-stamped photos of your gas, electricity, and water meter readings. Do the same when you arrive at your new home. These records protect you from being charged for usage that isn’t yours and provide solid proof if any disputes arise.

Notify Providers of Your New Address and Moving Date

Ensure all service providers are aware of your moving date and new address. Ask them to send final bills to your new address or via email. For any services you’re continuing (e.g. broadband or TV), confirm if you can transfer the service or if a new contract is required.

Set Up Utilities at Your New Home

If you’re moving into a new build or a property where utilities aren’t yet active, you’ll need to set up new accounts. Even in older homes, it’s worth contacting current suppliers to confirm whose name the utilities are under and if you’re free to switch providers.

Arrange for:

  • Gas and electricity (choose a supplier or stick with the current one temporarily)

  • Water supply

  • Broadband and landline (these can take up to 2 weeks to install, so book ahead)

  • TV services (including any satellite or cable setup)

Don’t forget to check if any meter readings are required upon activation.

Update Your Council Tax

Council tax is location-specific, and failing to update your address could lead to overpayments or missed bills.

Visit your new local authority’s website to register your new address. You’ll also need to inform the council in your current area that you’re leaving, to finalise any outstanding charges or refunds.

Redirect Your Mail

To avoid missing important letters like final bills, bank statements, or legal documents, set up mail redirection through Royal Mail. You can choose to forward post for 3, 6, or 12 months to ensure nothing slips through the cracks.

This also helps protect against identity fraud, especially if sensitive information is sent to your old address after you leave.

Update Payment Details and Direct Debits

Once services are transferred or updated, check that direct debits, standing orders, and payment methods are correctly set up for your new address. This includes:

  • Utilities

  • Subscriptions

  • Council tax

  • Insurance policies

Also, update your address with your bank, credit cards, employer, GP, DVLA, and any memberships or online accounts.

Keep Records of Everything

Moving is chaotic enough, so it helps to keep a dedicated folder (digital or physical) with all your utility-related paperwork. This might include:

  • Final bills and payment confirmations

  • Contract agreements

  • Meter readings with dates

  • Installation bookings or service confirmations

  • Contact details of each provider

Having everything in one place makes it easier to reference later, especially if any billing issues arise.

Keep Important Documents Safe with Our Packing Service

During a move, important documents like contracts, account info, and ID can easily get misplaced. At Phoenix Clearance and Removals, our professional packing services ensure your essential paperwork is kept safe, organised, and accessible so you’re not digging through boxes when you need them most.
